Our Favourite Independent Shops in Hampshire

One of our favourite pastimes is exploring our local area in search of an alternative to the high street. Having teenagers who often aren’t up out bed until the afternoon, we occasionally have a Saturday morning ‘window of opportunity’ to get out and about. We are fortunate enough to live in Southampton, Hampshire which is in close proximity to some lovely towns and villages within a 15 mile radius. In this blog we have included some one of our favourite independent shops, that you may like to visit if you ever find yourself in this part of the world.

Hero in Stockbridge

Hero is a beautiful shop located on Stockbridge high street. It sells a selection of ladies clothing, jewellery and home accessories. The owner also runs creative workshops and networking events, and co founded Big Small Business which she describes as “a conference, a supportive and guiding hand for small businesses and entrepreneurs”. We plan to attend one of their workshops in the near future. We would definitely recommend a trip out to Stockbridge, which has a diverse and thriving high street with plenty of good coffee shops, cafes and restaurants.

Consortium in Romsey and Winchester

Romsey is a small market town north of Southampton. There  is a good selection of independent shops. Amongst them is Consortium located on Bell Street, and there is also  a store in Winchester. This shop sells a range of vintage finds and funky home wares, ranging from accessories such as cushions, blankets, baskets and prints to larger pieces such as upcycled furniture. The Winchester store located on Jewry Street, is larger covering three floors including the Mint Tea Boutique that sells a really good selection of ladies clothing and accessories.

Kit & Caboodle in Romsey

There are two Kit & Caboodle shops in Romsey, both located in close proximity to the main square. The smaller shop sells a range of home wares, cards and stationary, jewellery and a few items of ladies clothing. The larger shop sells an excellent range of baby/children’s clothes and toys and includes a cafe. There is also a range of women clothing and accessories.

Located in The Square in Winchester opposite Winchester Cathedral, The Hambledon is housed in a beautiful Georgian townhouse encompassing three floors of beautifully curated items. In the basement there is a range of designer menswear and accessories. The ground floor is dedicated to a range of unusual and tasteful home ware. The upper ground floor sells a delightful selection of children’s toys and party products, as well as cards, books and prints. There is also a pop up shop area that changes from season to season. The top floor has an amazing selection of women’s designer clothing including many more unusual labels. The Hambledon also sells luxury beauty and grooming products. This store has won UK Independent Retailer of the Year and is really worth a visit.

This is a recent find! Located in Kings Worthy, just north of Winchester, and next to the Foundry, this is an interesting independent coffee shop. It is part of the Winchester Coffee Roasters Coffee School and is only open on Fri, Sat Sun. It offers an eclectic, friendly atmosphere and sells a good selection of wonderful coffee and home made cakes. A great place to chill at the weekend.
